When the pitures were taken of the students forming the BSS it was from a plane, not a helicopter, the photographer was a Mr. Bill Bailey. He was the Full time staff AV tech. Used to commute in from Peterborough every day.
I remember A&J's very well. I used to hold the record for eating the largest hamburger they ever made. I started with 4 1/4 pound patties and then when a few airmen started to order it I had an 8 patti burger with a coke. Finished it in something like 35 minutes.

Wow George!!!!!!!! Did you ever get free food for that accomplishment? There was a place in Winnipeg that if you could eat one of their largest burgers, that they gave you free food for 6 months. But back then in the A&J's era, it was likely the thrill of holding the record that was the ultimate reward.

Times sure have changed..... cheers Lance

no Wanda they are not the same... there are a lot of things not, or ever will be the same. They say you can't undo the things that are done. there are only a few days left of school so I think I will take a trip to Bayside School and look around... that is if they give me permission.... you can't have strange people wandering the schools these days lolol (not that I am strange) ;D I'll let you know how it goes..... cheers Lance

Walls, walls and more walls!! the school is full of them... they have moved things and classes and done away with others... Yes I took a quick stroll down the halls of the old haunt Bayside High, it had to be a quick stroll because exams had started. I spoke to Ron Harris who remembered me and wrote me a note to allow me in the halls...How ironic is that?? after all these years I still needed a note to be in the halls LOLOL ;D The front office is basically the same but the guidance area has grown. The old smoking court that was once a huge slab of concrete strewn with cigy butts tossed aimlessly about, is now a garden oasis with trees flowers and shrubbery ( looked quite nice actually) The cafeteria never changed... so off to the halls I went. I wandered down to see the automotive section only to find it had been replaced with the arts and theatrical studies. As I strolled I glanced side to side to view the array of lockers scratched, dented, faded and otherwise mistreated by the youth of past years. The whole thing was a bit saddening. I bumped into a teacher from the phys-ed dept (she took over from Mr. Meeks when he retired) She was kind enough to show me the gym and talked of times past. The gym is brighter but the same, seemed alot bigger when we were there? My final trek took me past what once was the math department and is now the grade 8 area!! What's up with that ? I thought this was HIGH SCHOOL? not some sort of minor preparatory school project.... alas I digress. I said my good byes and wandered to my car feeling funny and bewildered at the past half hour. The parking area, once sparsely planted with small spruce is now shaded by huge 20 foot tall trees, looming over groomed grass we then sat pondering the days to come. OHH I almost forgot... the football field is now flat!and the math department is down stairs behind the library. Well perhaps I shall wander again and pop into classes closed to me today. Until then... cheers Lance

Thanks for that update. I see they let you in after all of those years so it can't be all bad ;D And LOL at getting a note! Does that mean that you need a hallpass now? I sometimes wonder if it's a bad thing to go back and see what had become of things but I am glad to see you made it in. I am not surprised at the grade 8s though. Back in .......76 when I was in grade 8(I think it was in 76!) grade 8s were in portables outside the highschool. Out the door just down the hall where the home eck classes were. I think now-a-days they try and get grade 8s a smooth move into the high school setting so it isn't hard on them. So are you glad you went back or would you have rathered just remember as it was?

Wanda - I recall the portables for the eighth graders when I was in 13th (later to be calle OAC) grade. Our school back then had a large population thanks to the feeders schools, especially kids coming off CFB Trenton when our parents had four, five and six kids. Now, one or two if you are lucky on the base. And female officers can be married to enlisted husbands. Not back in the 70s. Hey, my mother in 1959 had to get out of the RCAF when she was prego with me and my married my dad, also air force. In Alberta, high school starts in 10th grade, ends at 12. Junior high is 7th, 8th and 9th grades....so there's no minor niners. Think of it, those went ninth to 13th grades, that's five years of high school before going off to uni or college. Here, and they only enjoy three years of high school. That's funny Lance would get a note (hall pass) from my old Grade 11 math teacher, Mr. Harris, now the principal. And exams! I loved Mr. Tubbs compare and contrast exams for 12th and 13th geography. I aced those....and Mr. Ingram had good English exams, which I aced. The high school also needed the extra bodies, so brought in the eighth graders. There was talk with the board of education taking the BSS building and turning it into a school board office...great site I suppose being central to Trenton and Belleville. Plus, the population was going down at the school....again, with less kids coming off the base, Frankford, Bata and Sidney township. Remember all those buses at the back of the school? Does anyone remember that big snow storm when we got to stay overnight and emptied the cafeteria? Memories. Those kids who were active in school, whether playing sports, in the band, doing theatre or joining Mr. Blair's rifle and chess clubs, will likely have more memories...fond ones, too. If you just went through the motions and hung with the same crowd, then it's tough to pique your memory (or it's short-term versus long-term as we age). Seniors can tell you about the battlefields in France around Vimy, but ask them what they had for dinner or lunch a few days ago. Huh!? Moreover, let's get our guests to sign into the postings.....and sign up for the reunion. Lance, did you get the B of Q people together for some brainstorming? How about you Ruth and Brian up in our nation's capital. Hit one of the chique pubs and get more stuff going eh. Two days into summer, and it's been fun reading the postings here. And dig out those old photos and share. Your kids will appreciate how some fashions have come full circle. But not the poly suits, eh! Or those ugly wide ties of the 70s are dad's wore when they went out for those New Year's eve parties. Gaudy! I have all of my late father's ties...plus a few he got in France, which are narrow and made of silk. Very stylish.

I remember the portables... and all the funny looking clothes we wore back then. Hallway passes? Wow sounds like something from the Simpsons.. We used to wander the hallways at will. Times have changed, now Bayside is a french immerson school. Back in my day I took my french course(required language course) in grade 9 to get it over with. Who thought back then you would ever need French to have a career. Try getting a government job without it now.

Yeah...memories are amazing things. I remember that storm...we all spent the night in school until the military came to rescue us in the morning with some heavy gear...it was so exciting at the time!!!
I also remember AJ's well....we used to go there regularly as did many Baysider's. It was sort of the "Arthurs" of Bayside/Trenton area.... I'm sure I saw Fonzie in there once or was it Mr. Zikopoulos under-cover!!!!!...lol

It seems this site as many of the others are not as busy as they once were.... are we all loosing the spirit? Is anyone else wondering if the reunion is actually going to take place? I have not heard anything remotely concrete about it and time is running out.... who is in charge of this reunion? Is it going to happen? Cheers Lance

Lance Romance - you're out in Trenton. Set up a meeting at one of the many Timmies you have there. Get the ball rolling from that end. Need someone to take the bulls by the horn. There are still a lot of BSSers out there and it will take someone...be the leader...from that neck of the words to initiate the meeting. That's what's not happened despite the dialogue here. And get hold of Mr. Harris at BSS...maybe have the meeting there. Get a hold of the CJBQ and have them talk it up on the radio. I'll send some press releases out to the Trentonian and Intelligencer this week coming.
Off to referee 4 hockey games...busy day.

Does any one remember the time we formed a human "BSS" for a picture for the year book. We all stood outside and made the letters BSS and there was a picture taken from a helicopter.
