Okay I was at the Dentist on Thursday and yhe dentist in Havelock (I think there is only one) used the term "ticketyboo". My dad and his friends used that all the time. I use it now and get a lot of looks from people. Those that have been in the military or been raised by parents in the military know exactly what it is. So let's see what everyone remembers about slang and old sayings used by our parents and us. I am starting off with TICKETYBOO that my dad use to say. So from 70 to 75 What was the major term we used? I used the term the DMI about a long gone drinking establishment.... So what was the major term used in your generation at high school....was it COOL....GROOVY...WACK Your turn....

My parents favorite saying was I hope your kids are 10 times worse than you were. Now considering we were angels(cough cough) Im sure mine aren't near as bad as I was. As for slang words...Cool, bodacious and awesome come to mind. Everything was Awesome or Cool even when it wasn't. My 17 year old daughters favorite right now is Suck it up Buttercup.

I honestly cannot remember a lot of the slang/sayings we used back in high school-age kicking in I guess. For my 16 year old daughter-last year everything was "SWEET" and this year everthing seems to be "SICK"!!!!

Does anyone remember "decent" and "excellent!"?. I also remember "gross me out". And going back a bit further the strange habit of shaking your hand at the wrist to make your index finger (the pointing one) slap against the rest of your hand. I have images in my mind of guys doing it but I can't seem to make any noise doing it myself.

I recall the slang terms had a lot to do with what we were watching on TV, as in Welcome Back Kotter or Archie Bunker.....hey, you "meathead" or "get stuffed". Even today, slang has a lot to do with the media messages we, or our kids, receive. Gross me out was always a good one, moreso when a guy did something to get the attention of a girl, with mixed results. Animal House produced a lot of slang terms. I know we didn't get it from Sesame Street...but then I was too old for that show. The younger reporters working for me pronounce Z as zee....because the show was out of the US. Did you grow up watching Mr. Dress-up (Casey and Finnigan) or the Friendly Giant, CBC staples. The former is no longer airing on CBC, even in re-runs as Mr. Dress-up is dead. CBC is going after the 18 to 24 demographics now.....much to the chagrin of Cst. Constable, now a sergeant, from the Beachcombers. Remember that character from the CBC show from Sunday night? Jackson Davies played that role and he's from Wetaskiwin....we talk regularly and I do a lot of PR for him through the media when he's done Beachcombers movies.....Relic and Bruno are all dead now. Jackson has done two movies so far, but CBC is not interested in adding more from Gibson's Landing...nor having the shows on DVD. Slang and our old TV shows.....your kids can now watch them on DVD. I just bought the first season of the Rat Patrol...cool stuff!
