Now all you 70's alumni.... contact everyone on your email , snailmail lists and phone lists and get some alumni in here...I know we have all gotten older, but it seems these 80's and 90's alumni are whipping our old butts when it comes to membership. We cant be letting that happen now can we .. we are the orginal Bayside Red Devils ..so its up to us to show the School Spirit. Anyone remember when Bayside had initation days and slave days?

Yes I remember Slave Day. In grade 12 I was auctioned of and bought by Mr Zikopoulos, my french teacher. I had to wear a toga, sit by his feet and then teach his french class.
Don't remember initiation days. Nothing happened to me that I remember anyways.

As a miner niner I was stuffed in a garbage can. A teacher pulled me out and said it was a good thing the principal didn't see me as I was late for class. I was grateful until a week later when I found out the man who pulled me out was Mr Read.
Cheers Sarah

I don't recall slave days, nor do I remember having the minor niners going through any form of trials and tribulations.
I recall Sadie Hawkins dances.
I know track pants were dropped, never saw any kids being suffed in lockers or in the garbage can. UGH!
Few teens had cars, so the parking lot was mainly filled with teachers' vehicles. Go to a high school now, and the students' cars easily out number the staff. I know that's the case at WCHS here in Wetaskiwin.
There were the Grade 8 portables in 12th and 13th grade when they were out beside the English area....where students would park down from the main football field to the east of BSS.
Turkey trot was always fun.
Winter carnival was fun, too, especially broom ball.
Did we ever use the B of Q for anything across the highway?
Was there sail boats associated with the school when it opened initially?

The only time I remeber going down by the Bay for any activities at Bayside was once when Kim Turcotte, Sharon Merriam and I went for the extra credit for the winter camping elective of Phys Ed. We did all of the course work in the back lot quarry area, but you could get extra credit if you actually camped out over night. The school gave us a tent, we loaded up Kim's car with my Dad's fire wood, about 6 sleeping bags and enough junk food to last a week and set up our camp down by the Bay across from the school. To keep warm, we sat as close to the fire as possible roasting hotdogs and marshmallows until we couldn't stand it any more. We tucked into the sleeping bags as early as possible and were back at the school the next morning before 8:00. Mr. Meeks and Mr. Chapman said knew we were back when they could smell smoke coming down the hallway. That was my first and last winter camping experience.

I remember being dragged into the boys changeroom and thrown into the showers. Luckily there were no guys showering at the time. When the same thing was done to some unsuspecting guy but in the girls shower, his only comment was "why do girls get shower stalls with curtains and guys just have communal showers. I wonder if its the same today?

Yes Ruth it is the same today....a way of life. There are various reasons why. I guess they never thought it was necessary to explain them to young kids......it's just the way it was. Maybe they figured it didn't matter to some young boys that a shower curtain was necessary or that Hair or the lack of can be a traumatizing thing when the older kids are pointing and making fun of the younger kids ( fortunately I was not in that group) I was never invited (forced) into the girls changeroom but i do remember siting in the overflow for team pep talks prior to game time. cheers Lance

Bayside students used the Quarry and area for lots of things back then. We used to do our run in gym class thru that area. And ofcourse those famous 70's quarry parties. Too bad the county didnt turn it into a park area. It was a nice walk in the fall with all the changing colors.
